The seed company CapGen Seeds from Almeria continues its commitment to research, development and innovation in different horticultural segments. This time they share with us a great novelty: their breakthrough in short cucumber.
After a five-year research and development program between breeders and developers, very competitive short cucumber varieties for spring/summer and winter plantings have been obtained.
New cucumber varieties coming soon
These varieties are CGC1076 and CGC1077, which are currently at the pre-commercial stage. Both are giving an excellent yield in production thanks to their short internodes, yielding up to two and three fruits per node in a high percentage.
The trials have been carried out on the coast of Granada, where the crop has adapted very well. The other trials have been carried out throughout the province of Almería and also in the Levante region of Murcia. The plant has responded very positively, accepting and tolerating different degrees of water hardness and different types of soil.
The fruits are very attractive because of their excellent dark green skin color, their brightness and their spiny skin. They have a size of 15 centimeters. They are very uniform and their weight is usually around 220 grams. They have a very good post-harvest conservation and maintain their intense flavor over time, making them perfect for export throughout Europe.
The plant is fast growing and has a high vigor. The size of the leaves is medium and its leaf coverage is medium, with good health between them thanks to the separation they have.
These varieties have intermediate resistance to Podosphaera Xanthii (Px), commonly known as powdery mildew. Powdery mildew is a parasitic fungus that frequently settles on the cucumber plant and is located in humid areas. It causes the plant to start yellowing and lower fruit yields, even to the point of drying out.
The CGC1076 variety is adapted to the greenhouse growing cycle. The other variety is exactly the same, except that it changes the growing cycle to spring/summer. This is called CGC1077. Growers who are testing this short cucumber variety have been impressed with the results they are getting in terms of yield and quality. Other strengths of this variety are its high regrowth capacity and low cane abortion.
